How to plan your food supply

In an emergency, access to fresh food can be cut off for days.

Calorie needs in an emergency

  • Sedentary adult: 1,800–2,200 kcal/day
  • Active adult: 2,400–3,000 kcal/day
  • Children: 1,200–1,800 kcal/day
  • Rule of thumb: store 20% more than calculated

Recommended foods to store

  • Canned beans, tuna, and vegetables
  • Rice, pasta, and dried beans
  • Freeze-dried meals
  • Energy bars and nuts
  • Powdered milk and crackers

Rotation tips

Apply the FIFO principle: first in, first out. Eat the oldest items first.
