Prepare for a power cut

PlanRefugio UK Team Updated: March 2026

The August 2019 UK-wide power cut left over 1 million homes without electricity — Hornsea offshore wind farm and Little Barford gas plant tripped simultaneously, cascading through the grid. Storm Eowyn (January 2025) caused over 1 million homes to lose power, many for 4-5 days. Power cuts are more frequent than people realise, especially in rural Scotland and Wales.

The difference between sailing through a power cut and panicking is three things: battery torches (not just your phone), a battery or hand-crank radio for grid updates, and cash. ATMs, card terminals and contactless all stop working without power.

What to do during and after a power cut

First minutes: unplug sensitive electronics (TV, computer, microwave) to avoid damage when power surges back. Keep fridge and freezer closed — without opening, a full freezer keeps food for 48 h, a fridge for 4-6 h. Use torches, NOT candles (fire risk near gas).

First hours: battery radio for updates from National Grid and emergency services. Check on neighbours and the elderly. Don't make calls — text instead, save battery. A 20,000 mAh power bank is the basic kit.

Beyond 12 hours: eat perishables first. If outside is cold (winter cut), close off one room and use it for everyone — body heat keeps it warmer. If outside is hot (summer cut), seek a cooling centre (supermarket, library, community hall). Pay special attention to babies, the elderly and anyone needing electrical medical equipment (CPAP, oxygen, insulin).
